Old Buckhurst, Withyham, Esat Sussex, The former residence of the Sackville family, Dukes of Dorset before they were granted Knole by their cousin, Queen Elizabeth I . The remains of the extensive Tudor fortified house of the Sackvilles are extant in the grounds of the present property and apart from the ruins found in the parkland there is still standing an impressive gatehouse built during the reign of King Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragaon. After the abandonment of Old Buckhurst the building mate belonging to the Earls of Delaware, cousins of the Sackvilles. rials were quarried for other uses and by the 18th c the property became a farmhouse. At the end of the 19th c the farm was occupied by the Stewart of the Delaware Estate. Eventually the twin oast houses, the barn and the adjoining timber framed house were converted to a single residence for Sybil Colefax 1874 1950 . Sybil Colefax laid out the Edwardian gardens. The Colefaxes entertained entertained on a grand scale the high society and PM Asquith and Bernard Shaw, amongst other were amongst the visitors of Old Buckhurst. During the 1929 Wall street crash Sybyl lost her family fortune which caused her to become an interior decorator a business which survived to teh 21st century.. After WWII Old Buckhurst was divided in six separate wings. The name of Old Buckhurst was retained by the main wing which includes the Tudor gatehouse and the archaeological remains of the original Tudor house.
